The Spring Festival is held each year during two weeks in spring. This year, it is held between 16 April and 02 May. Munich - with its many museums and galleries - is a real treat for art lovers. Some of the most attractive destinations of this kind include the Alte and Neue Pinakothek, the Modern Art Gallery in the Haus Der Kunst, and the Lenbachhaus. The art forms developing in Germany during the Middle Ages hardly left their mark in Munich, then a small salt-trading town. However, with the coming of panel and portrait painting in Germany around 1300, Munich had something to say. Or rather, its masters had. The Wittlesbasch family commissioned many such works (that were later lost or destroyed). The first 'big' name of Munich painting was the late-Gothic painter Jan Polack. Polack produced two altars in St. Peter's Church in 1492 and the altar in the Schloss Blutenburg chapel in 1491.
